Talking About Race and Anti-Racism

Worker Bees-

*Deep breath*

This week was awful.

The week was terrible.

This week was a tragedy.

Last Wednesday, I created a new lesson plan for you. I reviewed the concept, wrote the steps, and took the pictures. It will land soon, I promise…but not this week. My mission at The Busy B is to provide you with hands-on activities based on my experiences, expertise, and knowledge. However, this past week I made the conscious decision to educate myself on an insidious cultural disease, one that I will never truly understand. I read. I asked questions. I listened.

We need to talk to our honeybees about race and anti-racism.

Racism flourishes in silence. It is our responsibility to loudly condemn systemic discrimination and bigotry. Talking about race and diversity may seem intimidating, but it is incredibly important. This week, I do not want to teach. It is not my place. I want to learn beside you.

In my research, I have learned that an effective tool is to acknowledge race and racism with children starting at a young age. I have attached some resources that I have found to be informative and age appropriate. Included in these articles are book suggestions, strategies for talking about diversity, and approaches for discussing current events:

BEE kind. BEE well. BEE educated.
