Reading with your honeybee stimulates their imagination and increases their understanding of reality. In order to become an independent reader, your honeybee will want to practice high-frequency words that will increase their comprehension. “Sight words” is a term that commonly refers to a set of words that reappears within a text. Sight words are words that your honeybee will see the most in books and the world around them. Typically, sight words are not sounded out and should be quickly recognized by the reader. Effective sight word exposure will improve your honeybee’s overall reading abilities and confidence. In order to achieve accuracy, speed, and fluency, children are encouraged to master their sight words in the early stages of literacy.
In this activity, your honeybee will create their own Candy Land game! The goal is of this activity is to achieve the recognition of sight words through hands-on learning. Through the creation of this game, your honeybee will flex their executive function, memorization, and fine-motor skills while processing literacy content.
What you’ll need:
• Colored construction paper
• Scissors
• Markers
• Dice
• Game pieces
Stuck inside? Time for a family board game! Let’s get busy!
1. Cut colored construction paper into small squares (2.5 in. x 2.5 in.) to create game tiles
2. Handwrite sight words on multicolored tiles while leaving some blank
3. Write “start” and “end” on two tiles
4. Create a path with tiles mimicking the layout found in the board game Candy Land
5. Place game pieces on “start” tile
6. One player at a time must roll the dice and move game piece to the corresponding tile
7. Have the player read aloud the sight word that they landed on
*Optional play – Use the sight word in a spoken sentence or practice handwriting the sight word!*
8. Continue the game until one player reaches the end tile
