Shapes! Shapes! Shapes!

Shapes! Shapes! They’re all around!

Every day, your honeybee is exposed to the fascinating world of geometry! Whether they are two-dimensional or three-dimensional, children interact with shapes daily. Not only is it important for your child to recognize shapes, they should verbalize their properties and understand their defining characteristics.

In this activity, your honeybee will explore two-dimensional shapes through hands-on learning. The goal is to create physical evidence of reasoning and make sense of geometric ideas.

First, we must make our learning material! Here is what you’ll need:

  • Q-Tips
  • Food coloring
  • Cups
  • An old towel that you don’t mind ruining…because you will
  • 2 cups of water
  • Paper
  • Colored pencils or crayons

You ready? Let’s get busy!

1. Combine food coloring and water in cups

2. Add Q-Tips to cups

3. Remove Q-Tips from cups and pat dry on that old towel

4. Allow Q-Tips to dry

5. Create geometric shapes! Modify your creation based on ability

* Busy B Tip! Save your Q-Tips for another lesson! *

Be sure to have conversations about shapes and encourage questions. Use the proper language with your honeybee; they are smarter than you think!
